What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that consists of magnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.
TMS is often used for those suffering from treatment-resistant depression when other treatments such as medications and talk therapy haven’t been successful in reducing symptoms.
In patients with depression, nerve cells in the brain may be “dormant.” With TMS, the goal is to “awaken” or stimulate neurotransmitter activity in areas of your brain that regulates mood. The procedure is painless and safe.
Who can benefit from TMS?
Anyone with treatment-resistant depression can benefit from TMS. You may want to try TMS if you’re experiencing ongoing symptoms such as:
- Feelings of emptiness and hopelessness
- Irritability
- Loss of interest in favorite activities
- Insomnia and fatigue
- Reduced appetite
- Weight loss or weight gain
- Persistent guilt or shame
- Physical aches and pains
- Difficulty concentrating
Depression might be mild, moderate, or severe and crippling. If you have severe depression and haven’t found a treatment that works, TMS may be a good option to improve your quality of life.
Am I a Good Candidate for TMS?
To receive TMS treatment, you must be diagnosed with depression, and have symptoms that haven’t improved with other treatment options. It’s also important to notify your provider if:
- You have implanted medical devices in your body
- You’re pregnant, or may become pregnant
- You’re taking any medications
- You have any history of epilepsy (seizure episodes) or traumatic brain injury
- You have any other mental health issues
If you’re unsure you qualify for TMS, schedule a consultation with the team at Nexus of Hope Psychiatry & Mental Health Wellness.
What Should I Expect During a TMS Treatment?
Each TMS session will last about one hour. At Nexus of Hope Psychiatry & Mental Health Wellness, the team offers MagStim TMS™.
MagStim TMS is an FDA-approved device for depression. When you come in for your TMS session, your provider places the device against your head while it sends pulses of magnetic energy to stimulate nerve cells in your brain. You might feel a tapping sensation on your head or slight discomfort, but this quickly resolves after the session.
